About the Artist

Thomas has been working with clay for over four decades. Trained in traditional pottery techniques, he believes in the beauty of simplicity, honest materials, and craftsmanship that stands the test of time. His work is inspired by the natural world and the belief that everyday objects can bring comfort, function, and meaning to our lives.

The Process

Made by Hand

Each piece begins on the pottery wheel, where Thomas throws and shapes the clay by hand. After drying, trimming, and preparing the form, the work is ready for the distinctive Raku firing process.

During the Raku firing, each piece is heated rapidly and removed from the kiln while extremely hot. The interaction of heat, flame, smoke, glaze, and reduction creates unpredictable surface patterns and variations.

Although Thomas carefully controls the form he creates on the wheel, the firing introduces an element of chance. The result is a collaboration between the artist, clay, glaze, and fire—making every piece unique and impossible to reproduce exactly.
